Write Field

Soccer and poetry might go together like outdoor kids and indoor kids, but one local after-school program is making the combination work. America SCORES coaches at-risk students in eight Denver elementary schools to play and write. The thinking goes that those who scrimmage together can also compose together. And can they. Take this poem, for instance, penned by a group of Cowell Elementary students: "Poetry is loving someone when you don't know it/Poetry is wind whistling whoo!! and hail hitting your face like a thousand little rocks/Poetry is when I am writing and I am thinking about my family." Tonight, listen to the young rhymesters perform at an event emceed by two of Denver's hottest slam artists, Jennifer Rinaldi and Matthew Zembrano. The free show starts at 5:30 p.m. at the Oriental Theater, 4335 West 44th Avenue; call 303-832-5879 for information.
