Of course, hip rock venues don't usually host authors and academics. But for Barlow, that's the whole point. "It has an atmosphere of creative power," he says of the hi-dive. "It's not stiff. It's not typical. It's a place that has vitality to it." The same could be said of Astrophil's roster, which includes local writers like Laird Hunt and Keith Abbott both of whom will be among the eight edgy authors and poets taking the stage at the party. "I started the press to publish work that's too intelligent to be marketable. It doesn't have vampires in it," Barlow explains says with a laugh. "But it's too great to be ignored."
The Astrophil Party goes from 7 to 10 p.m. at the hi-dive, 7 South Broadway; admission to the 21+ event is free. For info, call 720-570-4500 or visit www.hi-dive.com.
