“This is really an eclectic event,” says organizer Elaine Lee. “Six years ago, the event began as time together around latkes, lights and lyrics — but very quickly, the latkes seemed to especially catch people’s attention. Everyone seems to love latkes, and the whole idea of chefs’ various takes on the latke. The innovative and creative part has been universally appealing to both Jewish people and non-Jewish people. We’ve tried to make this event as accessible as possible to anyone who would like to participate, cook, or just want to come and enjoy the festivities.”
Each entrant will prepare 75 potato pancakes ahead of time for the competition, which will be judged by a panel of three, including Rabbi Adam Morris. The grand tasting will be followed by dinner, balloon sculpting, face painting and the winners’ ceremony. “It’s an opportunity for multi-generations to work together as chefs,” says temple board member Alice Alban.
The Top Latke Taste-Off begins tonight at 5 p.m. at Park Hill United Methodist Church, 5209 Montview Boulevard; at 6:30, attendees can wrap up the evening with a free communal candle lighting and sing-along with the Top Latke Band. Admission to the tasting is $25 to $35 for individuals and $50 to $65 for families; visit micahdenver.org or call 303-388-4239, extension 1, for information.
