Get into a new genre of music I love all kinds of music, but obviously there are a number of genres I know little or nothing about -- there are only so many hours in the day, right? Still, there are a couple key areas where my ignorance and apathy is occasionally embarrassing, and I think it's time to fix that. There are three in particular that I feel I have unfairly ignored and those are hip hop, jazz and classical. I know a smattering of acts in all three, but not nearly enough considering their cultural relevance. I'm going to leave this up to the commenters, so weigh in on which I should tackle, and ideally, leave me a list of "must hear" pieces, artists, etc. Genre with most comments wins!
- Part with some of my dearly beloved and sadly neglected old gear I know a lot of you musician types can sympathize with me here. I have a load of old gear sitting in my garage, taking up space and gathering dust, but somehow I can't bring myself to part with any of it. It's not just that I could use the money (although I could) it's the fact that somewhere out there is a budding, neophyte musician who could get some real use out of that stuff, and I'm just looking at it and remembering when I used to be cool. That's just sad, and someone out there deserves a chance to make some music on my old toys, no matter how much it pains me to part with them.
- Go see any band that asks me to I kind of do this now, but I am a slacker extraordinaire and I ignore or blow off a fair amount of invites. No more! In 2009, if you ask me to come see your band (and put my poor ass on the guest list, I'm not running a charity here), I will do it. And then probably write about it here, so make sure you are ready for public consumption before you invite me over to grandma's basement...
- Get a group together to write and record an album in the month of February This is part of the Record Production Month Challenge, which I participated in this past February. It was very rewarding, for a variety of reasons, and I'm damn well going to do it again this year.
- Learn to play an instrument This has been a resolution since I was 17 or so, yet I have never actually done it. Turns out, it's kinda hard and, as I mentioned, I am a slacker. I'm pretty good at non-playing musical tasks -- I can chop up beats, design sounds and program synthesizers pretty well -- but learning how to play a bit can only open up new horizons for me. Maybe this is the year! It will probably be guitar, since I have one here at the house and my daughter can help teach me.
That's it for me. Don't forget I need your genre suggestions in the comments, and feel free to weigh in with your own resolutions as well. Maybe I will get inspired and add to my own list. -- Cory Casciato
