Her name is Dev. She may roll like a G6, but her sex-drive shtick is totally hot. And the sea of hands touching her naked body doesn't hurt either. Unlike other dance-pop starlets of today, Dev comes out of left field with a sound that's more Euro club than Euro trash -- think "Calabria 2007" versus "Tik Tok" -- but yet she still is a product of her producers. Without the Cataracs, she would just be another female sing-rapper. And one Ke$ha really is enough, thank you.
Dev's strength comes from the projects she lends her voice to. "Like a G6," produced by the Cataracs of all people, was an undeniable pop gem. "Bass Down Low," Dev's first official single, sounds best when it's bumpin' at a college house party. "We Came to Smash," a Martin Solveig track led by Dev's vocal, is a buried treasure of an album track. But it's "In the Dark" that will launch Dev into the mainstream, and it's the video to "In The Dark" that will put Dev on everybody's iPod.
Watching "In the Dark" is like dancing under a strobe light on ecstasy. In a sea of hands, literally, Dev manages to tease you, seduce you and entice you. She makes you want to touch her, just like every other hand in the video. Dev's look isn't as sexy as it is badass, but you can bet your Gulfstream G650 that it will sell the record. Somehow Dev has managed to out-gaga Lady Gaga with a video that's just sexy enough to turn heads and be cool, but not overwhelmingly sexy with some sort of hidden message. Consider Dev the escapist version of Gaga, but with piercing eyes. See for yourself.
Dev's debut album, The Night the Sun Came Up, was scheduled to be released tomorrow, but it has been pushed back due to her pregnancy. In the meantime, "In the Dark" sits at number twenty on the Billboard Hot 100 this week, up eight from last week.
Movers & Shakers: Maroon 5's "Moves Like Jagger" returns to the top, after Adele's "Someone Like You" drops only to number two, despite no official video release for non-single. Elsewhere, Nicki Minaj's "Super Bass" falls from five to seven, and Lady Gaga's "Yoü And I" moves from six to eight. Rihanna cracks the top ten with her newest single, "Cheers (Drink To That)," which samples Avril Lavigne (who would have thought?), while Lil Wayne's "How To Love" re-enters the top ten, from fourteen to nine this week, after a peak at number five earlier this summer.
Somewhat predictably, Katy Perry's "Last Friday Night" has fallen out of the top ten completely, notching a number twelve spot this week after being Katy's fifth single to hit the top spot from Teenage Dream. (She's going to release a sixth single, "The One That Got Away," in a few weeks, aiming straight for a new record.) Also predictably, Kelly Clarkson's "Mr. Know It All" sits pretty at number eighteen in its first week on the Hot 100. But the biggest non-surprise goes to Lil Wayne for holding down the top spot over on the Billboard 200 albums chart with Tha Carter IV.
Oldies but Goodies: Over on the Official Chart for albums, the Billboard equivalent for the United Kingdom, both the Beatles and Doris Day crack the top ten. Doris Day's newest set, My Heart, makes her the oldest female artist ever to debut inside the top ten with new material. Even more interestingly, the Beatles' greatest hits package 1, which has sold 30 million copies since its release, according to EMI, also enters the top ten in the UK at number six. Stateside, 1 breaks the Billboard 200 top ten again at number four.
