Chicago's Alkaline Trio (due this evening at Summit Music Hall with The Gamits and Smoking Popes) are one of those bands that essentially created a genre, and then thrived in it for the better part of two decades. The band's melodic punk came to prominence in the mid-'90s and has stayed on the smart and emotional path ever since, with the powerful threesome producing eight full-length records, including this year's Damnesia.

Tonight's line-up is a both a tribute to the era before pop punk was trivialized and a celebration of perseverance, as The Gamits and Smoking Popes have resurfaced in recent years to find a whole new generation of fans. This show is sold out.
