The Boston Beer Company, maker of Sam Adams, was the big winner at the first annual Denver International Beer Competition last weekend, winning fifteen of the 33 awards.
Several Colorado brewers took home prizes as well, including Oskar Blues, which won three awards, and Odell and Silverton Brewing companies, which each scored two.
Of course, there weren't as many entries as organizers had hoped for, says, C.J. Davies, president of Wine Country Network, which produced the event.
"We didn't get as many as we would have liked. There were about one hundred," he says. "Here is what kept it limited: We required that submissions were only beers that had won golds in other competitions. That weeded it down quite a bit."
That won't change the quality of the beer and food pairings which will be served on June 9 at Wine Country Network's Taste of Elegance competition, however. Especially since one of them, Boston Beer's Utopia costs around $150 per bottle in stores.
"It's more like a brandy or a cognac than a beer," Davies says of Utopia, which is 27 percent alcohol by volume and ranked as the second most expensive beer in the world. "As part of the agreement, they will have to submit enough for everyone."
