Ever since Eddie Murphy donned a fat suit in 1996 to play every member of the Klump family in The Nutty Professor, the success of that bit has given rise to a troubling phenomenon: the cross-dressing-black-man-in-a-fat-suit movie, a trick that effectively removes everything that was fun and charming about Murphy's turn and reduces it to the most base and obvious gimmick, then stretches it out for 90 excruciating minutes. And while the movies based on this premise have not been good by any stretch of that word since Nutty Professor, they've at least been bad in a sort of ignorable, irritating-undertone kind of way. The trailer for Big Mommas: Like Father Like Son, on the other hand, is fucking repulsive.
And Martin Lawrence as an obese, sexually assertive house-matron is only the most obvious way in which this trailer crosses over from the realm of the merely crass to the realm of the utterly disgusting: terrible puns ("more like Mary J. Bulge -- hai-o!): check. At least four testicle jokes ("I guess that's why they call it the 'nutcracker' -- hilarious!): check. Black people saying black people-ish things ("Aaaamen!" "Lawd, lawd, lawd!" "Oh haaaayull no!"): check, check and check.
Ladies and gentlemen, behold: You are now witnessing the modern rebirth of the negro minstrel show, in which Martin Lawrence willingly humiliates himself for the benefit of a paying audience of snickering rubes, then cries himself to sleep at night, because his own self-debasement is all he has left to sell.
