Snowshoeing allegedly has merits of its own -- REI calls it "one of the fastest growing sports in Colorado" and my folks are nuts for it -- but for me its real value has always been as a stepping stone.

I grew up snowshoeing/snowboarding in the Colorado backcountry alongside a few intrepid telemarkers, and I still can't conceive of snowshoes as anything more than my own private stairway to heaven, but you'll get a different perspective (and the basic info you need to get started, whether you're heading out for a winter hike or climbing with a board on your back) at the free Snowshoeing 101 workshop Thursday, November 5 at the REI Denver Flagship store.

The ease of snowshoeing has led it to become one of the fastest growing sports in the state of Colorado. Simply strap on a pair and go on a winter hike, backpack, or climb! Join the staff of REI as we put on another one of our famous "how to" clinics on the basics of snowshoeing. For youth and adults, we will focus on gear selection and skills needed to get you on the trails. In addition, we will talk about places to go. If you ever thought about getting into snowshoeing, this is a great introduction to the sport!
