Emily Griffith Technical College -- formerly Emily Griffith Opportunity School -- might have dropped the rose-colored nomenclature, but not the tradition behind it. The legendary working-man's academy, in business since 1916, still teaches everything from upholstering and barbering to auto mechanics and English as a second language. And once a year, the school throws an Opportunity Rocks the Block party to show Denver its stuff. This year's celebration is today from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., along 13th Street between Glenarm Place and Welton Street.
The diverse student body will lead off with a colorful Parade of Nations; afterward, guests will be treated to tours highlighting EGTC's forty-plus programs, interactive demonstrations, a hair-styling competition, a car show and an Emily's Got Talent Show, among other things; the first hundred people to show up and play will be treated to goodie bags.
Who knows? Maybe you'll find your calling. To learn more visit EGTC online or call 720- 423-4803.
