10 things to do for $10 this weekend, June 17-19, 2011

While most of us will be enjoying our Saturday by getting rowdy at the Westword Music Showcase, that doesn't mean there aren't plenty of fun activities to get thrifty with around the rest of the city. Well, provided you're into things like Pride Fest, Star Wars, yoga, dance parties and art, that is. See our full calendar of events.


The People vs. George Lucas at Denver FilmCenter (Friday, $9.75) The amount of people that currently despise George Lucas probably outweighs the people that adore him at the present moment, even if people are still obsessed with the first three Star Wars movies. If you've ever felt Lucas ruined your childhood by releasing the three prequels, then The People vs. George Lucas is the film for you. Mark Seal at Tattered Cover Book Store - Colfax (Friday, 7:30, free) Mark Seal will be on hand at the Tattered Cover to give a short presentation and sign his new book, The Man in the Rockefeller Suit: The Astonishing Rise and Spectacular Fall of a Serial Imposter. The book details the life of Clark Rockefeller, or rather, the man who Clark Rockefeller pretended to be. A conman and imposter, Rockefeller lead his life as someone else entirely and eventually, in a stranger-than-fiction twist, gets caught under rather bizarre circumstances. Wonderful - So What the Club Presents an Evening with Stevie Wonder at Beauty Bar (Friday, free) The premise of this So What party is pretty simple: songs sung by, covering, sampled or inspired by Stevie Wonder all night long. It's a brilliant idea for a themed night provided you love Stevie Wonder -- who doesn't? It should be a great way to dance off a rough week at the office. The Bungaloo at Kaze Gallery (Friday, free) A bunch of artist John Vogl's screen prints and concert posters will be up for sale and for taking a gander at tonight at Kaze and it's sure to be a simple, but elegant showing. His concert posters are some of the best in town and well worth stopping by to check out on their own, the rest of the stuff is just a bonus. Another Victory Over the Sun at MCA Denver (Friday-Sunday, $5-$10) Finally a show at the MCA is dedicated to our archenemy, the sun. That big, self-righteous blip in the sky has been making it too hot and causing us to squint for far too long, which is why Another Victory Over the Sun sounds like an amazing place to be. The basic premise clouds the MCA completely away from the sun, with artwork from a variety of artists existing in its own, personal space. Count us in. Juneteenth in Five Points (Saturday, free) There are seriously way too many festivals going on this weekend. If Pride Fest or the Music Showcase don't fit your bill for fun, then perhaps Juneteenth will. There should be plenty of live entertainment, food, arts, crafts and merchandise. Denver is seriously going to be one giant party this weekend. Denver PrideFest at Civic Center Park (Saturday-Sunday, free) If you've lived in Denver for at least a year, you likely already know what to expect from Pride Fest, but in case you're unclear, this is how it works: Saturday is all about the family friendly affairs, which include petting zoos, face painting and more. Sunday is all about the adults, which means plenty of music, dancing, drinking and outrageous performances. Plan accordingly. Mondo's Bitch Slap at Beauty Bar (Sunday, $5) After Pride Fest you might be itching for a little more entertainment and there's nobody better to provide that than Mondo. Well, Mondo and Jell-O wrestling, that is. Seriously, if you're not into the idea of Jell-O wrestling then you must have no soul. Yoga Rocks the Park at City Park or Alama Placita Park (Sunday, $10 in advance) Alternately, if the weekend has left you drained, you might want to venture out to Yoga Rocks the Park to get your feel-good on. It's not just Yoga, of course, there will also be plenty of other fun activities including musicians, vendors and more. If your dad is a big yoga fan, there is probably no better place to spend Father's Day. Father's Day in Denver Metro (Sunday) Speaking of Father's Day -- do something nice with your dad today. If you're all out of cash, go for hike, take a walk around City Park, or do what all Dad's love to do: grab some steaks and some beers and grill them up in the back yard.
