It's been two years since the once-private Anschutz Collection -- one of the world's most comprehensive collections of Western art -- first opened its doors to the public for limited guided tours in its home at the American Museum of Western Art. And it's been so successful -- perhaps too much so -- that to celebrate the anniversary, the museum, located in the historic Navarre Building, 1727 Tremont Place in downtown Denver, is expanding its public access hours beginning in June.
"Since we began our regular public tour schedule in 2012, we have seen tremendous interest in viewing this truly special collection, and we are continually asked for more -- more access, education and programming," says museum director Sarah Hunt. "As part of our two-year anniversary celebration, we are pleased to increase our open hours to provide a deeper glimpse into one of the gems of the western art world. Our hope is that...visitors from around the globe will come to Denver to experience the history of the American West at our museum." As of June 2, the museum's more than 300 artworks by 180 artists -- which range from iconic favorites by Frederic Remington, Charles M. Russell, Albert Bierstadt and Thomas Moran to the more modern Southwestern visions of John Marin and Georgia O'Keeffe -- will be open for added self-guided tours at 11:45 a.m. or 3 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays, in addition to the current docent-led tours at 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. The $5 admission price for self-guided tours includes a complimentary audio guide, while the slightly longer guided tour costs $7 to $10. In addition, the museum will host Artful Insights museum talks on the first Monday of every month throughout the summer.
Reservations are recommended for all tours, which are limited to 25 people each; visit the museum website for information.
