Urban adventure races and downtown scavenger hunts have become old hat in adrenaline-conscious, wheel-happy Colorado. But when AIGA Colorado, the regional design association, decides to put on an outdoor event, you know it's going to be of a very different type. To that end, letterpress typographer Rick Griffith of Matter and I Heart Denver proprietor Samuel Schimek have teamed up with AIGA to devise Terminal Velocity, a June 23 adventure race like no other, for which teams of of two to four competitors must seek out and photograph each letter of the alphabet using urban typography from signs, billboards and landmarks. Both completion time and excellence in a range of categories will help determine the winners.

A smartphone is a must, as are Instagram and Twitter accounts; registration for the race, which begins at the I Heart Denver Store in the Denver Pavilions and ends with an after-party at the Matchbox, is now under way. It costs $10 per person to enter, but you will, among other things, take home a hand-printed letterpress poster by Griffith for your trouble; go to AIGA's website to sign on.
