Brent Podosek wants to make you laugh -- but he wants to get you drunk first. The local comedian's new showcase at The Lobby every Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. aims to not only share some jokes but kick the keg.
Podosek is the father and host of Kick the Keg Comedy. He likes telling jokes about looking like a really approachable guy, getting old and drinking beer. He'll be joined by a handful of other comedians who'll tell jokes while $5 pints of craft beer flow out of the taps -- until someone eventually kicks the keg and wins a prize.
Podosek grew up in Lynchberg, Virginia, but now calls Golden home. He's an avid skier and advocate for men's health awareness, as well as a budding comic. He looked far and wide for a place to host his brainchild Kick the Keg Comedy, and finally found it at The Lobby.
His idea was simple: "A standup comedy show with the goal of the audience kicking the keg of beer and giving out some kind of a prize," Podosek explains. And the Lobby, which is located in the old Hotel Paris building at the edge of the Ballpark neighborhood made it a perfect spot for the concept; it's known for a rotating beer selection to match its American fare, and is in close proximity to other breweries in the downtown area. "They're literally across the street from Great Divide, so I thought this was going to be perfect," he says.
The event is no a month old. "Each Tuesday we're doing a special tapping with different breweries from around town," says Lobby co-owner Meg Batizy. "We're doing special beers that would normally be more expensive." Grimm Brothers, Avery, Great Divide and Oskar Blues have all donated kegs of tasty brews, and at forty-to-fifty pints per keg, the prizes keep coming.
Podosek features five other comics each week.So far comedians like James Gold and Michael Karlik have been part of the show -- and people interested in joining the lineup can check out the web site. Since Denver is brimming with comic talent and talented beer-makers, the night is a guaranteed good time. After all, Podosek says, "Drinking beer and listening to comedians is fun."
