Local doctor Terry Grossman is betting on living forever. Grossman is the personal physician of Ray Kurzweil, a renowned inventor whose beliefs about a fast-approaching technological "singularity" that will change the nature of existence led Rolling Stone magazine to recently call him "The world's scariest techno profit." But there's nothing to worry about, say Kurzweil and Grossman: The rise of the machines will be a good thing, with all humans becoming immortal. To make sure everyone's healthy enough to survive until the singularity -- an event scheduled to occur somewhere around the year 2050 -- Grossman conducts $3,000 to $6,000 "longevity evaluations" at his Grossman Wellness Center in Golden and co-authored with Kurzweil the bestselling 2005 guidebook Fantastic Voyage: Live Long Enough to Live Forever.
There was only one problem with Fantastic Voyage: eternity doesn't seem long enough to get through its 400 dry pages and 2,000 footnotes. To spice things up, later this month Kurzweil and Grossman will release Transcend: Nine Steps to Living Well Forever, essentially the CliffsNotes version of their guide to never-ending life. This time the two death-defying colleagues employ a more convivial tone, pretending they're talking to readers from the fantastic future. They also come up with a handy-dandy health mnemonic: Talk with your doctor, Relaxation, Assessment, Nutrition, Supplementation, Calorie reduction, Exercise, New technologies and Detoxification. "Transcend" -- get it? Pretty clever.
