Support the independent voice of Denver and help keep the future of Westword free.
When the owners of the the Rocky Mountain News revealed that the tabloid would close in late February, Dean Singleton, the Denver Post's publisher and head of MediaNews Group, announced that he hoped to cajole 80 percent of Rocky subscribers to sign up with his paper -- a number that would be historically unprecedented, as noted in this sidebar to the December feature article "The Rocky Mountain News is Going Down."
In an effort to accomplish that goal, the folks at the Post have come up with a subscription offer meant to appeal to Rocky fans -- although it's as likely to piss them off as warm their cockles. As you can see by the coupon above, locals who subscribe to the Post will receive a "FREE POSTER!" of the Rocky's front page on February 27, its final edition. In other words, get a memento of the paper you can't get when you pay for the only one left.
How's the deal going over? Well, one person who contacted me after receiving the offer in the mail earlier this week described his feelings in three words: "Jesus. Fucking. Christ." Nice poster, though.
