Seventeen of the volunteers arrested were released prior to this morning's arraignment, and the final one, Corey Donahue, is scheduled to go to court tomorrow. Four of those arrested were also taken into custody during the first round of arrests.
Although Friday afternoon's arraignment for the protesters arrested that day ended with only five needing to post bond, in large part because of prior offenses, all seven of those in court this morning required bail of between $500 and $1,000. Representatives of the Denver Anarchist Black Cross, the organization taking care of the brunt of Occupy Denver's legal work at this time, have said that all 25 of the arrest sentences carried a bail requirement this round, a much heavier repurcussion than the first 24. That of Corey Donahue, the final volunteer arrested around 11 p.m. last night after Mayor Hancock made his announcement about the 24 arrested, is estimated to be $2,500, the highest in Occupy Denver's legal history so far. Although the group rallied for public support at this arraignment, like the last one, the gathering this morning was meager: Only seven people attended in comparison to a full courthouse on Friday.
Today's judge mentioned the potential for future charges to include restrictions from returning to the Occupy Denver site, though the city's legal team did not ask for that this morning. In the meantime, the Occupy Denver group is collecting funds to go toward the total bail requirements, and $500 was raised last night in preparation. Donahue's bail presents the most financial difficulty, and the group was unable to bail out all of the volunteers arrested in the first round until yesterday afternoon.
Today's general assembly meeting will be especially important, and it may involve another rally, but the main focus lies on bailing the remaining eight volunteers out of jail.
"There was a huge mobilization and a huge police retaliation last night across the world," says Catherine Keffer, a member of the group's legal team. "We need to deal with how we'll not be attacked on a nightly basis and how we'll deal with the police. I still don't know what we're going to do with Corey's bail. That will be tough."
