An intense look at the lives of three female soldiers, Soldier Girls wouldn't seem the normal fodder for People. But then, this particular issue also features a cover story on JFK Jr. and wife Carolyn, "Their Untold Love Story" -- a piece as shallow as Thorpe's book is deep.

Before Thorpe was Colorado's first lady, and then Colorado's ex-first lady, she was an award-winning political journalist and author of the 2004 Westword cover story "Head of the Class," which led to the best-seller Just Like Us. And with an unexpected assist from People, Soldier Girls now seems to be headed in the same direction.

Here's People's take, and the original page below.
What's it like to be a woman in the military? Over 12 years, Thorpe follows grandmother Debbie Helton, single mom Desma Brooks and college student Michelle Fischer, three unlikely friends in the Indiana National Guard. They struggle with the male-dominated culture around them and survive deployments to Afghanistan and Iraq, returning to a world that seems trivial in comparison. A raw, intimate look at the impact of combat and the healing power of friendship.
