Basil the robot, who was unsuccessful in a bid to serve beers at the Wynkoop Brewing Company last year but has since redeemed himself with several triumphant performances, will give the service sector another go tonight from 6 to 9 p.m. as part of an event for the First Friday Santa Fe Artwork, which takes place a couple blocks away.
Created by Gamma Two, Incorporated founders (and husband-and-wife team) Jim and Louise Gunderson, Basil was profiled by Westword writer Joel Warner in this December 17, 2008, feature story. He'll be serving food and drinks; it hasn't yet been decided whether it will be hors d'oeuvres and canapés or mechanistic-sounding snacks like nuts, chips and screwdrivers, although the idea of spilling salsa on Basil has been frowned upon.
Basil will be joined at Gamma Two's headquarters, 209 Kalamath Street, Unit 13, by the company's second robot model, Wilma. The Gundersons expect Basil and Wilma to be on the consumer market in 2010 as helper robots and domestic assistants. So this is your chance to meet them before they become stars. Humans welcome!
