When most of us are stuck in a traffic jam -- particularly during a Monday morning commute after a snowfall that left potentially icy pavement in its wake -- we tend to think about the inconvenience to us before we think about the story behind the stoppage.

But this morning's shutdown of C-470 at Interstate 25 took place for particularly tragic reasons -- the death of a suicidal man.

Look below for information about what we know so far.

At about 3:23 a.m. this morning, according to a release from the Lone Tree Police Department, officers were called to assist members of the Douglas County Sheriff's Office in looking for a suicidal male said to be driving a white Subaru.

Just over an hour later, around 4:30 a.m., LTPD reps found a car matching the description on the westbound C-470 flyover from northbound I-25. However, the Subaru was unoccupied, prompting a search that led to a grim discovery: An adult male was lying in the westbound lanes of C-470. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

At that point, officers shut down the flyover and both lanes of C-470 beneath it -- and the roadways in question stayed that way until around 7:15 a.m., after which they were reopened.

The man has not yet been publicly identified pending next-of-kin notification, and neither is there an official cause of death in the case. However, Lone Tree spokeswoman Kristen Knoll says the working theory is that he leaped from the flyover to his death. She has no information at this point about whether he was struck by a vehicle or vehicles.

If you have any information about this terrible incident, phone the Lone Tree Police Department at 303-339-8150.
