Reader: As a White Man, I Feel Appreciated When I Don't Get Racially Profiled

Our post about the national publicity that followed a Milliken BBQ joint's plan for a "White Appreciation Day" spawned a lot of back-and-forth among our readers.

Some people thought the uproar over the nation constituted political correctness run amok.

But the majority felt the concept was stupid, wrongheaded or a combination thereof.

Here's a pointed comment representing the latter viewpoint.

As a white man, I feel appreciated every time I don't get pulled over because I'm black or Latino. As a white man, I feel appreciated every time I go into a department store and don't get followed around by the staff. As a white man, I feel appreciated knowing that I'm not going to be beaten by the police because of the color of my skin. As a white man, I feel appreciated by the injustice of me receiving more money for the same work as my peers and friends who might be a different color than me. I do not need "white appreciation day." It's just beyond stupid.
