Update: The grand opening has been postponed, again, until June 12. Of all of the new developments in the area, one in particular has had residents crazy with anticipation: Denver is getting a new drive-in theater and opening night for the Denver Mart Drive-In has finally been set.

When the project was first announced in January, the opening was targeted for Memorial Day — but manic spring thunderstorms delayed the installation of the drive-in’s massive, 87-foot-wide by 40-foot-tall screen until this week. Once it goes up, though, all systems will be go for this cinematic throwback. “We are extremely proud to be bringing Denver a new urban drive-in experience,” says Misty Flachman, event manager for the Denver Mart. “With state-of-the-art cinematic technology and a great space, we’re confident that we can introduce the nostalgia of the old drive-in to a new generation.”

The Denver Mart Drive-In's premiere summer season will run until Labor Day, and promises a double feature of first-run films every day of the week. The Dwayne Johnson earthquake epic San Andreas will be the 'A’ film opening week, with a TBD ‘B’ movie following right after. Gates will open at 7:30 p.m., with the first film starting at dark. Tickets are $10 per person (children six and under are free), and you can pay for a whole car full of people and reserve a spot for your vehicle (there are 310 spaces) via the cute denvermartdrivein.com website. Walk-up tickets will also be available, with “bring your own seat” seating available in a patio area right in front of the screen.

The drive-in will boast a brand-new digital cinema projection system with crystal-clear sound coming into your car via an FM radio station (89.1). Just as important to some customers will be the fully stocked concession stand, complete with the usual suspects of popcorn, soda, nachos and candy as well as some eats from Subway.

On top of filling a summer fun void — the Cinderella Twin closed in 2007, leaving Commerce City's Rosemary 88 the last original drive-in in the area — Denver Mart Drive-In has plans to giving back to the community through two local charities: Adaptive Adventures and The Senior Hub will collect 100 percent of the gate every Monday and Tuesday, respectively.

And the fun won't end after Labor Day: the Denver Mart Drive-In plans to continue operating four days a week through October, with the possibility of some special cinematic events — think classic films – in the off-season.

Catch a double feature at the Denver Mart Drive-In, 451 East 58th Avenue. Reserve tickets and peruse the schedule at denvermartdrivein.com.
