Chisom Nwandilibe ID'd as Gunman Shot by Cops Near 17th and Broadway

Update: Yesterday morning, we told you about an officer-involved shooting of an armed suspect near 17th and Broadway that resulted in street closures and RTD re-routes. See our previous coverage below.

Now, the suspect in the case has been identified as Chisom Nwandilibe, 28. But it's not yet known what he was doing with a gun or whether he left additional victims in his wake.

As we've reported, Denver police officers responded to a report of a man with a gun near the intersection of 15th and California around midnight on May 26.

After they caught up with a man identified as Nwandilibe, shots were exchanged.

One bullet struck Nwandilibe in the arm, and after he was treated, he was put through the standard booking process and relocated to a cell.

Nwandilibe has a criminal record, but it's not filled with violent incidents.

He was reportedly busted in 2012 on criminal possession of identification documents and resisting arrest.

In the end, he received a two-year deferred sentence in relation to the former beef.

The charges are likely to be considerably more serious this time around. In the meantime, Nwandilibe remains in custody at this writing.

Original post, 5:47 a.m. May 26: With suspected gang-related shootings spiking in Denver and Aurora, officials are doing all they can to prevent the Summer of 2015 from turning into Summer of Violence II.

Or Summer of Violence III...or Summer of Violence IV....

But an incident that took place on the tail end of Memorial Day Weekend, traditionally the first weekend of summer, isn't a good omen.

Late last night and early this morning, Denver police officers got involved in a gunfight with a suspect near 17th and Broadway who was only stopped after taking at least one bullet.

Expect street closures early today as a result of the investigation.

The first official word of the incident came via this Denver Police Department tweet: shared shortly after midnight

The note about an officer sustaining an injury in the tweet above hasn't been retracted on the DPD Twitter feed. However, multiple news agencies, including 9News, 7News, CBS4 and Fox31, all report that no officers were actually injured in the incident.

As for what happened, cops are said to have originally been called to 15th and California on a report of a man with a gun.

Officers spotted him a couple of blocks away — and when they tried to engage him, he allegedly opened fire.

The cops shot back, then gave chase on foot.

They eventually rounded up the man near Broadway and Cleveland Place. He'd been shot but is expected to survive.

Given the location of the shooting — a stone's throw from the iconic Brown Palace Hotel — TV personnel were soon on the scene. Twitpic senders include CBS4's Rahel Solomon....

While the suspect is in custody, the story isn't over. As noted by 9News, streets closed as a result of the investigation include 17th from Broadway to California and Broadway from East 17th Avenue to Cleveland Place.

In addition, RTD quickly rerouted F and H line trains to Union Station, with D line trains ending at the Convention Center and buses helping to transport those going from the center to assorted stops ending at 30th and Downing.

Thus far, neither the name of the suspect nor the officers involved have been released.
