No. 18: Pink Lady Roll at Sushi Sasa
Don your leather pants and pink coat and get ready for a superb ride of flavor when you order the Pink Lady Roll at Sushi Sasa. It sings with rich omega-three and well-balanced heat, and has a pleasing texture thanks to the addition of fried vegetables.

Inside the creation you will find spicy scallop and white asparagus tempura, a lovely combination that gets topped with tender yellowtail belly, fresh avocado and a brushing of bright lemon. The dish also comes with a side of spicy macho sauce, a dip made out of jalapenos, ghost chiles, cilantro and the citrus-based Japanese condiment ponzo. Definitely dip your bite into this concoction; it gives the roll the same kick that Sandy finally gets at the end of the movie Grease.

To fully enjoy this special roll, reserve an intimate table in this bright restaurant off Platte Street, or take a seat at the cozy sushi counter and watch the chefs work the fish into submission. It's all part of chef-owner Wayne Conwell's vision to create "Kokoro bebop" in food form. What exactly does that mean? Well, kokoro, or heart, is the soul of the place, and the dishes are the bebop, a phrase that comes from a style of fast-paced jazz — but in Conwell's sushi world, the word refers to how he interprets Japanese comfort and soul food. Hence, you have a pop-culture roll all about rebelling, harmonious ingredients singing together, and good taste in dress.

The Pink Lady Roll is $18.95 for eight pieces, much cheaper than Danny Zuko's famed hot rod — and tastier too. Try it today, tomorrow or any day of the week for lunch or dinner, and see why this restaurant has remained a hit for over a decade.

We're counting down the best dishes in the city in advance of Westword's Dish event on September 20 in Sculpture Park at the Denver Performing Arts Complex, where many of our Best of Denver winners — along with other favorites — will congregate to serve up small plates. If there's a dish you think we need to try, tell us about it in the comments section, or shoot us an e-mail at [email protected].
