It's time to start saving money for those Black Friday deals — but you can still enjoy yourself this week at a variety of free events around town. Check the Westword calendar for more activities, and let us know of any more freebies in the comments section.
Open Mic Magic Night at Mutiny Information Cafe (7 p.m. Monday, free)
Sure, we have a hell of a comedy scene in Denver — but what's up with the magic scene? Up-and-coming illusionists will gather at Mutiny tonight to hone their craft and do some tricks for the crowd. Catch the next David Blaine in the making!
Talkin' Shop with Venue Owners at Mutiny Information Cafe (7 p.m. Thursday, free)
This Talkin' Shop is a real behind-the-scenes look at the guys who've given local comedians so much stage time. Matt Orrin of El Charrito, Scott LaBarbera of the Oriental Theatre and 3 Kings Tavern/Mutiny Information Cafe booker Jim Norris will tell how they got all those comedy shows going. After their talk, stick around for a taping of the Mostly Harmless Thanksgiving podcast, "Home for the Holidays." And if you can't make Mutiny tonight, you can download a podcast of Anthony Crawford's show here.
Art Bar Swing Social with Odessa Rose at DADA Art Bar (8 p.m. Thursday, free)
In these days of swipe rights, you need something to set you apart from the rest of the herd. Maybe having a swing in your step will give you the extra flair that will persuade someone to finally smash that "like" button. Check out the free swing-dancing classes presented by Swingin' Denver, complete with Gypsy and Americana band Odessa Rose, at DADA. You may not even need the Internet for dating after this one.
