Black Black Coffee expanded this week when the TAXI coffee shop took over the space in which Refuel had been residing. Now, in addition to pour-over coffee from a variety of roasters, Black Black serves food. Rebranded as Black Black Coffee + Kitchen, the new spot has a menu that consists of breakfast (served all day), sandwiches and salads. The roster encompasses classics like breakfast burritos and gooey PBJs as well as unique sandwich options like the Phig (fig spread, brie, prosciutto, olive oil and arugula) and Beetwiched (roasted beets, spinach, chèvre, golden raisins, olive oil and Maldon sea salt). A daily grab-and-go sandwich or salad is also offered, and nothing on the menu is over $9.
Almost two years ago, when Black Black opened in TAXI, it was a transition from a pop-up coffee shop, serving only hand-poured black coffee. No sugar. No milk. Owner Joshua McNeilly has the philosophy that if your coffee needs doctoring, it must be broken. Black Black is among a new wave of coffee shops that believes coffee done right needs no altering. But with the expansion, the cafe added an espresso machine and is now serving milk-based espresso drinks such as lattes and cortados. So if black coffee isn’t your thing, try one of the carefully crafted espresso options made with coffee sourced from a rotation of about ten different roasters, from local producers like Middle State Coffee and Sweet Bloom to beans from across the country like Four Barrel Coffee and Parlor.
Carrying the minimalist philosophy over to the food menu, the kitchen also believes in delicious, handcrafted goods, homing in on balanced flavors without an excess of ingredients. And if you go here at 1 p.m. weekdays, you'll be greeted by a warm batch of chocolate chip cookies. Black Black is open Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
