She's also a social-media expert who shares the good, the bad and the ugly with her followers.
And unfortunately, her latest revelations fit into the last category.
Vonn announced on Instagram that she's ending her season and leaving the World Cup circuit — despite being the overall leader in the current standings — due to three fractures in her leg.
Most pics Vonn posts tend toward fun — like her showing off the latest Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition, in which she appears wearing body paint.
But she doesn't shy away from showing herself in situations that most celebrities would rather hide from the public.
An example: In November, as we reported, she Facebooked a video of her hand after it was mauled by one of her pets.
Just a typical weekend...I tried to breakup my dogs fighting over a frisbee and got bit. I seem to be injury prone on and off the slopes lol. At least I have a good jimmy Fallon costume for a belated Halloween costume don't worry though, I'm skiing tomorrow! Thx Dr. Viola for fixing me!

Her communications took another medical turn after a crash this past Saturday, February 27.
This photo notes that initial exams revealed a fracture....
She followed with a graphic shot of her knee being drained....
...and an X-ray with a helpful graphic pointing out a "pretty substantial fracture in my tibial plateau."
The consultation with trainers noted in the caption above obviously led to a tough decision, which Vonn spells out in detail under a photo of her on the slopes — where she won't be for a while.
Count on Vonn to keep us up to date with her rehabilitation. That's the kind of thing a social-media pro would do.
