Downtown Englewood gets a new bar tonight with the opening of the Englewood Grand at 3435 South Broadway Street. The simple, straightforward watering hole is the work of Phil and Erika Zierke, neighborhood residents who saw the need for a community gathering spot with an enticing but uncomplicated drinks list.
The bar features just a few tap handles, including two from Locavore Beer Works in nearby Littleton, as well as a selection of house cocktails with spirits that lean toward small-batch distillers. Phil Zierke has previous experience at both upscale establishments (Mercantile Dining & Provision) and dive bars (the Candlelight Tavern); his new place splits the difference, with a certain amount of elegance but without complicated drink menus or elaborate ingredients. Food will come in the form of simple crock-pot dishes.
The Grand is exactly what the Zierkes envisioned: understated, warm and unpretentious. Bar stools and bench seating welcome guests at the front of the space, while several high-backed booths offer more private accommodations. Beyond that, there's shuffleboard in the long, narrow back room.
If you're stopping in, be sure to check out the restrooms; they're some of the nicest you'll find in any straight-up bar in town. Keep reading for more photos of Englewood Grand.
