A Bucket of Fools Takes Over Crossroads Theater on April 1

Crossroads Theater is in the middle of its first Last Week of Arts, which will culminate on Friday, April 1, with a special two-part Bucket of Fools show. This will be the sixth edition of Bucket; past monthly performances have resembled variety shows with comedy bits, musical pieces and impromptu sketches as local artists and creatives brave the stage in order to cross something off of their bucket lists.

Crossroads production manager Jaryd Smart is behind the series, and promises that this version of Bucket will hold a special April Fool’s surprise. “They change every month,” Smart says of the Bucket series. “Some of them have been more heavily music-based, and some of them have been more performance-based. The idea is to try something new. We’re trying to never make it the same twice, while still being somewhat consistent.” 

While the first half of the show will follow the familiar Bucket format, the second half will feature Fools, a short play by resident playwright Sean Patrick Cassidy. A regular at Crossroads, Cassidy will also star in the show, along with visiting actress Bridget McCloskey. Both Cassidy and McCloskey graduated from the drama program at Oakland University in Michigan. “I’ve always wanted to come to Denver, and the fact that I get to perform while I’m out here at the same time makes it so much better,” says McCloskey, who lives in Detroit.  

Cassidy and McCloskey worked together on the production, which will feature guest artists as it explores the different stages of relationships in a lighthearted yet sometimes serious vaudeville-like style. “We’re inviting friends and strangers alike to come out, have some drinks, hear some fantastic local acts, and see some inexpensive theater that they might not know is available to them,” Cassidy says.

Tickets are $10 “or whatever makes you feel good,” says Cassidy, and beverages will be available by donation. Doors open at 7 p.m. for an 8 p.m. showtime.

Smart says the April Fool’s show is a great reason to tune out the digital devices and experience a raw, unfiltered live performance. “I think it’s important for people to get out from behind their TVs or their computer screens to come and see something that is live," she explains. "We’re living in a very digital age, and the importance of this is that it’s real life, and it encourages people to go out and live real life.”
And Bucket of Fools isn't the only real experience that the theater is offering right now: Crossroads is in the middle of its inaugural Last Week of Art series, hosting a show a night. Smart says Crossroads will continue to offer Last Week of Art every month.
