Launch of Outdoor Film Series at Denver International Airport Postponed

UPDATE Thursday, June 30, 1:50 p.m.: Due to inclement weather, the Alamo Drafthouse has postponed the Top Gun screening until July 7. 

"The rescheduled event will begin at 5:00 p.m. with a performance by New Sensation '80s tribute band followed by the screening at sunset," the Drafthouse wrote in a statement. "The first 100 people will receive a food voucher provided by Alamo Drafthouse Cinema and enjoy giveaways including aviator sunglasses and movie prizes. Additional food will be available for purchase as well as a cash bar."

The Alamo Drafthouse Cinema is flying high this summer, with a new partnership with Denver International Airport calling for the Alamo to produce a free, four-film series this year, Film on the Fly, which will show off the new open-air plaza that connects the iconic Jeppesen Terminal with the Westin Denver International Airport. The series starts on Thursday, June 30, with a screening of aviation classic Top Gun.

"We're constantly trying to evolve and challenge the conventions of film screenings,” says Steve Bessette, creative manager at Alamo. “When the opportunity to partner with and screen at the coolest airport in the country came up, we were ecstatic. We're really looking forward to connecting with new communities and friends."
The plaza where the cinematic action will occur is right above the new drop-off/ jump-on spot for the airport’s A Line train, which ferries passengers back and forth between the airport and Union Station. Airport officials say they want to show off what makes Denver and Colorado great, encouraging passengers, DIA staffers and community members alike to attend the new “Events at DEN” series.

Two titles have been announced, for June 30 and August 18 (the other dates are October 20 and December 15). Pre-show fun and activities begin at 5 p.m., with the film starting at sunset. The first 100 attendees will be rewarded with Alamo food vouchers (for use at the chain's Littleton location), while food and a cash bar will be available in the plaza. Tony Scott’s action classic made a star of young hot-shot Tom Cruise, with its high-flying tale of a Navy fighter pilot maneuvering his way through a dramatic flight program and a tricky relationship. Known for its iconic soundtrack and subtle homoerotic undertones, the film is a high-octane ’80s crowd pleaser so bright they’ll be giving away aviator sunglasses at the screening.

Pre-film BMX stunt show and DJ set to keep the audience from “phoning home”
One of Steven Spielberg’s most beloved films tells the story of an alien, left behind by his brethren, who falls in with a human teen and his family — until the government catches wind of the creature and sets out to take him for its own studies.

Admission to the movies are free. Parking at DEN will range from $8 to $24 during these events, but you can also take the A-Line commuter train for just $9 for a round trip from anywhere in the metro area when the ticket is used on the same day.
