Danny Howells

Danny Howells's third Global Underground release is culled from a pair of live performances at Space, in Miami. The first disc is taken from a sunrise set on the venue's rooftop terrace. A smooth blend of sexy vocals and exotic rhythms, the set builds slowly and, while the high points are certainly of superstar caliber, parts of the mix seem to drag on. It may have been magical to hear the airy sounds as the first morning rays peeked over the horizon, but it just doesn't translate to the speakers with the same feel. Meanwhile, the second disc, definitely the better of the two, captures an after-hours set in Space's main room. The playlist is unique (heavy guitar riffs, surreal melodies -- even flutes!), but the mix doesn't push the envelope nearly enough. Fans may enjoy Miami #027, but those looking for innovation should keep looking.
