Party Like a Rock Star

Magic Cyclops concedes that the main thing that makes tonight’s free Championship Karaoke at the hi-dive (7 South Broadway) the “Holiday Special Edition” is the fact that it occurs during the holiday season — but he does promise the possibility of celebrity appearances. At the very least, the ol’ MC himself will be there, along with (possibly) his new alter ego, Rod Rick Randy, whom he describes as a combination of “every karaoke host I’ve ever seen, complete with a beer belly and a moustache.”

The night did get a nod in Spin magazine last summer, and there really is a chance that someone more famous than Magic will pop in and hit the stage — just as Jake Gyllenhaal did a few months back.

Despite the national recognition, the wacky weekly karaoke night has undergone some changes. For instance, Magic no longer gives away handmade decoupage plaques or bar tabs to the night’s best wailers, but we like to think of the current incarnation as a kinder, gentler, more egalitarian one: Now all participants are considered champs just for showing up and belting out a tune or two.

Doors open at 8 p.m. for the 21-and-over show, which starts at 10. Visit or call 720-570-4500.
