Years ago in Denver, there was a band that probably should have been lumped in with the goth scene but wasn't really having it. Radio Scarlet definitely looked the part of death-rock fashion victims, and it's entirely possible that these guys may have borrowed more than a bit from Rozz Williams-era Christian Death. However, the act's music actually had a real sense of desperation and decadence. When Radio Scarlet moved on to L.A., Douglas Halbert ended up developing music to perform on his own as BIRTH! Equally embracing the musical darkness of death rock and post-punk, as well as aggressive synth-punk like the Screamers and Suicide, BIRTH! is urgent and exhilaratingly menacing. The shows are usually just Halbert and pre-recorded music, but his wildly animated, confrontational performance style would make Alan Vega proud.
