Starting with the humble aim of putting out a seven-inch record, the Dead Weather realized at its initial recording sessions that its members had real chemistry together, and they ended up recording far more material than could fit on one record. Often referred to as a "supergroup," the Dead Weather comprises Jack White of White Stripes fame; Alison Mossheart of the Kills; Dean Fertita, who has been in both the Waxwings and Queens of the Stone Age; and Jack Lawrence, who is still in the Greenhornes. With everyone in the band a veteran of bluesy punk and garage rock, it's no surprise that such a sound would emerge in the music they make together. What is surprising is that the band's two albums sound very much of the moment instead of just a fashionable retread of classic rock.
