Perfumer Dawn Spencer Hurwitz has made a big splash with the scents she concocts at her Essence Studio in Boulder under the brand “DSH” (www.dshperfumes.com). Her latest coup is starring in her own performance piece, Sense, at the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art, where she’ll show off her scent-making skills.

“We are so excited to have Dawn here at BMoCA,” says David Dadone, the institution’s executive director. “She will create two or three scents inspired by Stephen Batura’s paintings, making the perfumes right in the gallery so people will be able to observe the entire process involved.”

For the pieces in his solo show, Edits, which is nearing the end of its run in BMoCA’s West Gallery, Batura turned images from fashion magazines into collages, scanned them and then created monumental abstract paintings based on the scans. The glamor of fashion is the perfect backdrop for the equally glamorous perfumes that Hurwitz will conjure up.

Sense gets under way at 7 p.m. tonight at BMoCA, 1750 13th Street in Boulder. Tickets are $10 for BMoCA members and $15 for non-members; for more information, call 303-443-2122 or go to www.bmoca.org.
