For the tenth year, Denver will commemorate the life of civil rights leader César Chávez with a march. But this year’s celebration will focus on involving a broader spectrum of the community. “César Chávez was able to accomplish what he did because he had all these wonderful qualities as a human being, but he was also able to engage other people,” explains Elizabeth Fajardo, the coordinator of Journey Through Our Heritage and an organizer of the event.

In addition to the march, the day’s activities will include music, dancing, poetry, refreshments and César Chávez leadership awards given to one woman, one man and one young person who best exemplify the qualities of the farm workers’ advocate. “We want to bring attention not only to all the struggles that have gone on in the past, but also take a hard look at what’s happening now,” says Fajardo.

Today’s commemoration will start with a mass at St. Anthony of Padua, 3801 West Ohio Avenue, at 8:45 a.m.; the march will go from there to the Denver Indian Center, 4407 Morrison Road, the site of the rest of the activities.
