Up on the Roof

It's patio season, in case you hadn't noticed, and rooftops all over town are buzzing. But one rooftop blast is about to pop up where you'd least expect it: in a parking lot atop the Denver FilmCenter, in the Lowenstein CulturePlex. FilmCenter director Ryan Oestreich, who dreamed up the idea of transforming the open-air lot into a party venue one day when he was parking his car, says, "I thought, why not do an event up on this roof -- something that would involve music and beer, which are things everyone here loves? Why not have a block party? We'll just have to get rid of these cars...."

One thing led to another, and tonight, Raise the Roof -- a festive combination of live entertainment, food and drink provided by neighborhood restaurants, and a free-movie tie-in — will debut from 5 to 9 p.m. up on the roof of 2510 East Colfax Avenue, with its mile-high views of downtown Denver and the Rockies.

There’s no real theme, Oestreich notes, except maybe the local thrust: "It’s a Denver block party, full of all things Denver," he says.

Admission to the party is free, though the eats will cost you; guests will also receive free tickets to catch a 9 p.m. movie downstairs after the party ends, with an option to come back another time, if that's not convenient. Tonight’s slate includes the winner of Denver Comic Con’s battle of the bands, along with local favorites Fair Children and Tom Hagerman of DeVotchKa, with emcee Sid Pink. The party continues on August 9; for a complete schedule, call 595-3456 or visit www.denverfilm.org.
Second Thursday of every month, 5-9 p.m. Starts: June 14. Continues through Aug. 9, 2012
