Kenny Glasgow and Jonny White were both thriving underground electronic-music producers before Damian Lazarus and his Crosstown Rebels label brought them together in a brand-new way. The two artists had been friends for years — both have been instrumental in putting Toronto on the map as a serious dance-music town — but when Lazarus asked them to remix some Riz MC work for Crosstown Rebels, the promising prospects of a potential collaboration became readily apparent. They came up with a new concept — to create a live DJ/vocalist performance act — and that was the beginning of the powerhouse we know today as Art Department. (The Art Department remix of Riz MC's "Don't Sleep" can still be heard spinning on dance floors around the world.) Their sound has all the soul and emotion of house music melded with crisp, precise techno, and they'll no doubt keep the Jet Hotel rocking into the early hours of the morning when they headline a hotel takeover on Saturday, December 29.
