Clark, the ensemble’s greatest booster, has always held that tuba music doesn’t really sound as bad as it seems. In fact, he says, it can be quite melodic when properly tailored to the instrument. Yes, he admits, bringing an eight-to-eighty community band together for just one day without much practice is a challenge, but somehow the crew always manages to pull through. And believe it or not, similar concerts have sounded off in cities all over the world for close to forty years; the first took place in Rockefeller Plaza in Manhattan in 1974.
