While the rest of the world will be looking ahead to 2013 on New Year's Eve, Slam Nuba will travel back three decades for its Kwanzaa ’80s Hip-Hop Theme Party at Crossroads Theatre.

“Kwanzaa is a celebration of family, community and culture, and this is what I feel that old-school hip-hop was about,” says event creator Neambe Leadon. “Most American holidays are centered around family unity and acknowledgment of each other; Kwanzaa is the same when it comes to the gathering of all generations to celebrate culture. And the principles of Kwanzaa are reflected in true hip-hop, bringing people together because of their diversity, opening the Kwanzaa event to people of different cultural backgrounds and of all generations.”

Leadon is quick to point out that Kwanzaa is not a religious event, so people of all faiths can enjoy the vintage ’80s fashion, along with the b-boy/girl battle ($5 to enter, winner take all), a screening of the film Soul Food Junkies, a martial arts expo, and music by DJ Cavem.

The Slam Nuba Kwanzaa event begins at 5:30 p.m. at Crossroads Theatre, 2590 Washington Street; it's free and family-friendly. For more information, call 303-832-0929 or go to www.djcavem.com.
