Crash Landings

The eight tracks on Crash Landings' Tragedy tread musical ground that will be instantly familiar to fans of old-school punk and hardcore. Songs like "Burn Your Money" and "Who's Next" summon the spirit of Jello Biafra and the Buzzcocks, with power chords, simple guitar solos and pounding drum lines that drive lyrics about waging war and personal vendettas. The album is at its best, though, when the group pushes beyond its influences. Take "Lay Me Down," for example: The tune still features distorted guitar lines and snare-heavy drumming, but it's in waltz time, and the mood is downright bluesy, as lyrics about bad memories and hopelessness unroll. Moments like these make Tragedy seem refreshing and hint at the greater potential of this band.
