The Joy of Six

Denver has a vibrant, thriving comics scene, and collectives like Squid Works are a big part of that. For nearly twenty years, the artists, writers and various other creatives of Squid Works have been producing an array of content in every medium under the wide umbrella of “comics” while helping foster a community for that work here in Denver.

“Comics encompass so many different things — comic books, comic strips, one-panel gags, web comics and more. It’s so hard to characterize it anymore,” says Stan Yan, the group’s nominal leader. “I always like to describe us as a twelve-step program for comic creators who don’t know any better than to quit.”

The work of half a dozen of those creators will be on display at the Six Local Comic Artist Signing, highlighting the latest from Yan, Dan Conner, Shane Rodriguez, Jake Roth, John Peters and Paul Niemiec. The show features everything from slice-of-life realism to off-kilter takes on traditional superhero comics, offering a tantalizing cross section of what Denver’s homegrown talent has to offer.

Meet the artists and see their work tonight at 7 p.m. at Mutiny Information Cafe, 2 South Broadway; admission is free. For more information on Squid Works visit
