A few years ago, a group of local women filmmakers realized that there weren’t a lot of women like themselves getting the spotlight. “There’s a very large filmmaking community in Denver, and there was a feeling that women filmmakers were underrepresented. We noticed that at screenings, there were a lot of men getting up and talking about their experiences making films, but not women,” says Eileen Agosta, program director for tonight’s opening of this year’s Colorado Independent Women of Film.

Working within a scene based around a long-running monthly showcase of Colorado-made work called the Emerging Filmmakers Project, these moviemakers branched off to form their own yearly fest, during which women from all aspects of the process — screen-writers, editors, directors, cinematographers and actors — are highlighted.

The two-night event will offer a curated lineup of 25 films, a mix of submissions as well as work selected from the EFP. Feature-length films like documentary Women Warriors — A Vision of Valor will screen alongside a collection of shorts and animations made for kids featuring local child actors.

The 2014 Colorado Independent Women of Film kicks off at the Bug Theatre, 3654 Navajo Street, at 7 p.m.; Q&As with the filmmakers will follow. Screenings resume tomorrow at 5 p.m. at the Bug.
