Continental Sausage wins a Good Food Award for its bison pastrami

Denver-based sausage-maker Continental Sausage won a 2014 Good Food Award for its bison pastrami. Added to the award that Serendipity Confections of Wheat Ridge took for its chocolate-covered butter caramels with fleur de sel, that means Colorado companies have racked up sixteen awards since Good Foods began handing them out in 2011.

The Good Food Awards honors food and drink that is not only delicious and authentic, but also created with the utmost social and environmental responsibility. They are given out annually to companies who produce food an drink that is natural, sustainable, mostly local and crafted while treating animals humanely and the environment respectfully.

This year's winners were selected from 1,450 entries from across the nation. The 225 judges, all experts in their fields, selected the winners after a full day of blind tasting in San Francisco. Continental Sausage emerged with an award in charcuterie; awards were also handed out for beer, spirits, preserves, cheese, chocolate, coffee, confections, oils and pickles.

Continental Sausage has been churning out gourmet sausage and meats, among other deli foods, since 1969. The company sources all of its raw materials within 500 miles of Denver whenever possible, and strives to purchase only all-natural meat from farmers who use no growth hormones or antibiotics and raise their animals humanely. "What we are doing is creative, it's different than what other people in America are doing," says Continental spokesman John Roelke.

The bison pastrami was added to the lineup a couple of years ago, he says, adding that the product took off quickly. Along with that bison pastrami, Continental also submitted its Jackalope sausage and buffalo jalapeño cheddar bratwurst for Good Food awards; both were finalists.

If you want to try Continental sausage products, you can pick them up at the deli at 250 Steele Street in Cherry Creek. Biker Jim's is also a certified peddler of the Continental bratwursts.
