Racines at thirty: Tradition trumps trends

There are certain sights you can count on in early January, including gyms full of people acting on New Year's resolutions to shed a few pounds, culinary pundits offering off a host of predictions about what to expect in the way of trends...and friends gathering at Racines, a restaurant that always opens at 8 a.m. on New Year's Day, so that regulars can start the new year in their neighborhood hangout.

Whether or not za'atar and small plate desserts become the "in" thing in 2014 remains to be seen. But if they do, it likely won't be at Racines.

The restaurant, which just celebrated its thirtieth birthday at the end of December, has been called many things during its long run -- including Best Power Breakfast spot in numerous editions of the Best of Denver. But it's hardly ever been called trendy -- and that's by design.
