Things to Do

3 things to do for free this week, October 29-November 1, 2012

Now that you're past the age where you can dress up in a costume and knock on people's doors to get candy, you need to use other ways to get things for free this Halloween week. So we've found three All Hallow's Eve-themed events that won't deplete your wallet, from screenings of classic horror movies to a pet costume parade and block party, to a witchy Dia de los Muertos trunk show. And if you know of other events for free, leave them in the comments section below.

Jonny D's Fright Night at the Deer Pile (Tuesday) Get scared this evening at a free screening of a pair of filmmaker John Carpenter's finest: the original 1978 Halloween and The Thing. It should be the perfect precursor to Halloween; grab a cupcake downstairs at City O' City and go upstairs to scream as you watch two terrifying flicks from the minimalist horror master.

Halloween Safe Street and Pet Parade at Old South Gaylord Street (Wednesday) Spend the real day of Halloween on Old South Gaylord Street, which will be filled with family fun. The festivities include a pet costume parade, as well as food trucks; shops will be open, so kids can trick or treat along the street. Dia de los Muertos Potluck Dinner & Party at Goldyn (Thursday) The spooky fun doesn't have to end on Halloween -- because Dia de los Muertos is coming right up. Boutique Goldyn will celebrate that holiday with a potluck dinner and trunk show showcasing work from Collarbone Jewelry. Bring food or drink to share, and join in magical practices like tarot readings and spells that promise to make this a very lively Day of the Dead bash.
