Local hero Steve Fisher's been a busy dude since we last caught up with him for our Westword cover story at the beginning of the US Snowboarding Grand Prix series:
That double cork got him in the end after all, and he missed another chance at the Olympics, but he held his own on the Winter Dew Tour and finished in second place behind JJ Thomas (another Breckenridge local) in the overall standings. Last week Fisher, Thomas, and Zach Black filmed a Breck segment for the next Warren Miller film, and tonight The Fish and his Sims Snowboards mentor Tom Sims will be on FUEL TV's show The Daily Habit.
This weekend he and Erich Dummer are hosting the Third Annual Sims Pro-Series Snowboard Camp at Echo Mountain, so we took the opportunity to catch up with him and see what's up:
The last time we talked was right before the Grand Prix and all the Olympic hoopla got under way. How have you been?
Good. It's been really nice having a couple weeks off after everything. It's been a real hectic season.
I know you were disappointed to miss the Olympic team. Was it hard to watch it?
I'm trying not to make too much of it. The Dew
Tour went really well for me again, and really I've just been trying to get some
good photos in editorial wise, get some really good riding in. I did a shoot with JJ Thomas and Zach Black at
Breckenridge for a Warren Miller last week, and I'm really looking forward to seeing the footage when that film comes out.The Olympics would have been cool, but riding in a Warren Miller film, that's a dream too, you know? I'm stoked.
What do you have in store for folks who head up to Echo Mountain this weekend?
It's a Sims pro camp, where kids from the front range area will be able
to ride with the pros from Sims, and when we've done them in the past they've always been a ton of fun. I'm gonna show up and high five some
people, and I'll be riding and guest coaching with the kids. It's really kind
of loose, and Echo has a great setup for it with a couple of big jumps, a bunch of rails, and a boardercross track. We're supposed to get some snow before the weekend, so it'll be a great day. It will be me, Erich Dummer, Colin Langlois, and maybe Lindsey Jacobellis, and then whoever shows up for the camp. Come on up and we'll see if we can't teach you something!
