What 's up with One Book, One Denver?

Who grabs the three titles, out of the blue, that we're allowed to "vote" for each year in the first place? And what if we're not exactly blown away by said choices? Don't get me started. But the thing is, whether or not these books are really chosen by democratic process, the point of the whole annual promotion, sponsored by brainy Mayor Hickenlooper and the Denver Office of Cultural Affairs, is to get us all talking to each other and, of course, actually READING a book, that thing with two covers and all the printed pages in between, which is in its own way a noble cause.

Anyway. The winner was actually determined in June, although the title will be announced officially on Wednesday. In the meantime, not everyone knows that one can already place a hold on the mystery title online for pickup at at any Denver Public Library location. The worst you can do is end up with a copy of The Help by Kathryn Stockett, Fine Just the Way It Is by Annie Proulx or The Story of Edgar Sawtelle by David Wroblewski, all acclaimed titles.

My point being: You'll be fully prepared before the winning title is revealed on Wednesday, September 1, along with a schedule of public events for those who want to play along. Get it while you can. And, hey, if it doesn't knock your socks off, take it back!
