Now, a new charge has been leveled against him: attempting to hire someone to kill a witness in the case. Specifically, his ex-wife.
The Walters case is the second of late in which a high-profile arrestee has been accused of seeking to bump off a potential witness. Just last week, news broke about Brandon Smith, charged with soliciting the murder of Bill Jordan, the man whose finger he's said to have ripped off while stealing a just-introduced iPad at the Cherry Creek Shopping Center.
No new documents have been issued in relation to the additional count against Walters. However, Lynn Kimbrough, spokeswoman for the Denver District Attorney's Office, confirms that the alleged target of the new murder plot was Walters's former wife, whose comments are prominently featured in the original Robert Walters arrest affidavit. Robert Walters (DOB: 07-08-86) was charged earlier with first-degree murder (F1) and was formally charged on Friday, August 20, 2010 with solicitation to commit first-degree murder (F2).
In the early morning hours of November 17, 2009, Denver police responded to the 100 block of South Yuma Street on reports of a traffic accident that appeared to cause the death of 22-year-old Brittney Brashers.
The charges allege that Walters murdered Brashers, his girlfriend at the time, and then drove the vehicle into parked cars to make it appear as if her death was a result of the accident. The additional count filed last week alleges that Walters subsequently tried to arrange for the murder of a potential witness in the case.
Walters is scheduled to appear on September 1, 2010, in Denver District Courtroom 3C for a preliminary hearing at 9:30 a.m.
