That's a big number for a guy who told police that while he kissed and groped a teenage student, he didn't have sex with her.
That information comes from the David Rangel arrest affidavit. According to the document, a foster mother contacted the Greeley Police Department after one of the teens for whom she cares told another that "she had sexual relations with a teacher at Jefferson High School" with the first name of "David."
Moreover, she indicated that she had been texting and instant-messaging back and forth with him -- the same sort of communication that came back to bite former Broomfield High School wrestling coach Travis Masse and Longmont High School teacher Alex Tinsley, Rangel's immediate predecessors in the alleged-creepy-teacher sweepstakes.
Shortly thereafter, a GPD officer spoke with Rangel, who initially denied that he'd done anything inappropriate. But the student told the officer that although there'd been no intercourse, they had kissed -- something Rangel later confirmed after saying "he was sorry for not being completely honest," the affidavit says. Rangel said the kiss lasted ten to fifteen seconds and included over-the-shirt breast caressing, but he claimed he wasn't "aroused" because he knew what he was doing was wrong. He conceded, though, that he and the student engaged in subsequent conversations about having sex with each other.
Not quite, the student maintained in another interview. According to the affidavit, she said Rangel touched her breast under her shirt "with skin to skin contact," then "moved his hands underneath her pants toward the lower front part of her vagina." She said she stopped him before he could hit the spot. In addition, she noted that Rangel had encouraged her to sneak out of her foster home and meet him at school, but she declined because of alarms at the house.
Rangel's response to that? Confirmation, pretty much.

Rangel was arrested following an investigation into allegations that he sexually assaulted a 16-year-old student during the beginning of this school year. The Weld County District Attorney's Office has formally filed one felony count against Rangel: Sexual Assault on a Child by a Person in a Position of Trust, a class four felony.
According to police reports, the foster mother of the victim reported a sex offense to the Greeley Police Department on September 16, 2010. Officers then began investigating allegations that Rangel, a teacher at Greeley's Jefferson High School, engaged in conversations throughout the summer with the victim that were sexual in content and that he subjected her to sexual contact earlier this school year in his classroom.
If Rangel does not post bond, he is scheduled to appear in court on Friday, September 24, 2010 at 8:30 a.m. for a Hearing on Advisement. If Rangel does post bond before Friday, he is schedule to appear in court for a Hearing on Advisement on October 12, 2010, at 9:00. Rangel's case will be heard in Division 11.
